Arkansas State Red Wolves (6-6 overall, 2-2 this week)
Following a 5-run victory over Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday, the Red Wolves traveled to Birmingham to start a weekend triple header with soon to be WKU conference foe UAB. The Wolves got locked Friday night 5-0 and lost Saturday 3-1, but ASU managed to capture the series closer 5-3. Friday nights match boasted Bradley Wallace for ASU, who pitched 4 innings and allowed 6 hits on 22 batters faced. However pitching wasn’t the problem. What has so far been a not-offensively challenged Red Wolves squad became just that, failing to plate a runner and only putting runners on base 7 times in 30 at bats. Saturday, ASU still didn’t win but managed to get a run out of only putting 5 runners on base. Southpaw Chandler Hawkins allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, but only lasted 4 innings pitched. Sundays win for the Red Wolves was from David Owen who went 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits. ASU put runners on base 8 times and was able to plate 5 of them. Sunday’s team was a better representation of the Arkansas State team we’ve expected to see from the first couple of games before this series. The Red Wolves will travel to Springfield, Missouri this week and take on Mizzou State in a double header looking to rebound after this weekend’s disappointing performance.
