WKU basketball: Hilltoppers look to advance to semis against UAB

It’s day two of the Conference USA tournament, and the WKU basketball team doesn’t want it to be their last game of the year. The Tops didn’t play perfectly last night, but they played well enough to knock off the #12 seeded Marshall Thundering Herd to punch their ticket into the second round, which will see the Tops take on the host Blazers in the Legacy Arena.

The last time the Tops and Blazers got together, it wasn’t pretty for those waving red towels. While the final score was only a five point differential, the Tops blew a 31-28 halftime lead and found themselves down by 12 with four minutes remaining.

But, to their credit, the Hilltoppers didn’t go down without a fight, as Chris Harrison-Docks would get hot down the stretch to bring the Tops back to within a couple of possessions, but the shooting wasn’t good enough to hit every shot, and the Blazers prevailed.

But, as Ray Harper said in his post game comments after the Marshall win yesterday, this is a different team than it was three weeks ago, and the Tops are going to want to prove that tonight.

CHD was the spark plug to the Tops offense last night, and hopefully we can see a repeat performance from

T.J. Price

who posted 22 the last time these two teams met, but only notched a quiet 13 points in the Marshall win.

One thing the Tops will want to see change dramatically is the output of George Fant, who played only 12 minutes yesterday due to foul trouble. Fant was about as effective as you can be while on the floor for 12 minutes, finishing with four rebounds and five points, but if he can stay out of foul trouble and keep himself on the floor, I’d watch out.

The mission for the Tops tonight is to not necessarily play a

perfect

40 minutes, but score consistently. WKU had several stretches last night where they went four minutes of game time or longer without scoring, and against a team like the Blazers, you won’t be able to enjoy much success that way. The Hilltoppers were also able to keep the UAB roster in check on the score sheet – only three players scored 10 or more – and that’s something to aim for again tonight.
