WKU basketball brings inaugural Conference USA season to end against Old Dominion

What a crazy season it has been for WKU basketball. After dropping three of their opening four, and losing to the likes of Belmont, Stony Brook and Murray St. (who, in hindsight, are good clubs who have their sights set for the big dance in a couple of weeks), the Tops spurred a massive come from behind win against the Fighting Bjork’s in Oxford, gave Louisville all they could handle, and then went on a nine game losing streak, began Conference USA play 7-0 and saw an impressive double-double streak from George Fant which spanned 11 games.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end, as the Toppers fell on hard times – they saw their win streak get snapped in ugly fashion on the road and two weekends later, saw the beginning of a four game losing streak, knocking WKU off their pedestal.

But not completely.

The Tops not only have been able to right the ship over the past three games, but got out to such a hot start, that they’re still in eligibility to have a first-round bye when the Conference USA tournament tips off on Wednesday. And, while nothing is certain and we could have a whole bunch of zany tie-breaker scenarios, let’s make sure we do the first thing first – get the win.

If you’ll recall the last time the Tops took on Old Dominion, the Monarchs were the #25 team in the land and the Tops were able to knock them off 72-65. But, that was then. And this is now.

More from Bluegrass Dominion

Not saying that ODU is any better than they were in the last meeting, but they do not like to lose on their home court, and have won 20 games in a row inside the Ted Constant Convocation Center (or, as the Monarchs’ call it, The Ted, but as a Braves fan I can’t get myself to do that). The Monarchs also are riding a five game win-streak and currently sit in second place in the conference.

So, while a WKU loss doesn’t completely keep them out of playing on Wednesday, let’s just be safe and hope for a win. Here’s your game info.
