Lady Toppers win 10th straight game 76-61 over Charlotte

The 25th ranked Lady Toppers have reached a win streak of double figures after winning their 10th game in a row and second in a row to start conference play with a 76-61 win over the Charlotte Lady 49ers in the Queen City.

The Lady Tops got out to a 15-9 lead in the first half,  but just a few minutes of cold shooting gave Charlotte what they needed to come back and come within a possession. While they hung close, they were never able to over take WKU, but did force a halftime differential of three points, which I saw and I was honestly surprised at.

Charlotte would come back and tie the Lady Tops at 46 with 16:06 to play, but after that, WKU began to pull away and did so for good, getting out to a 62-49 lead, cruising to the large victory.

The most surprising thing of the night, besides how close the 9ers kept things – and for how long – is how lopsided the scoring was on the WKU side alone. Alexas Govan continued her tear, scoring 24 points while Chastity Gooch wasn’t far behind with 21 and outside of that – there wasn’t a whole lot. Nine from Ivy Brown, eight from Bria Gaines and seven a piece from Kendall Noble and Micah Jones was the extent of the scoring, as Govan and Gooch carried the team all night long. Not that that’s a bad thing.

The 49ers also only had a pair of double figure scorers, and were lead by 13 from Kira Gordon and 10 from Kenya Olley. Leading scorer on the season, Lefty Webster, only put up nine, but did grab 11 boards, so she was effective either way.

WKU shot 48% from the floor and nearly 60% from beyond the arc, while holding Charlotte to only 29% and 22%. Eeesh.

Yes, this was (kind of) much closer than I thought it’d be, but still a relatively comfortable victory and it seems like the Lady Toppers cannot be stopped right now. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
