More Hilltoppers honored after Navy win
It’s become almost an assumption – a question of “when,” and “by who,” as opposed to “if,” – that after each football game the Hilltoppers play, win or lose, someone is going to garner some sort of honor.

Well, this week was no different, as a pair of Tops were honored by various media outlets. First up, is junior kicker Garrett Schwettman, who was named a Lou Groza Star of the Week by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. The Lou Groza award, founded in 1992, is given to the nations top place kicker and is run through the Orange Bowl Committee. (Look, you learned something today!)
Schwettmann became just the 10th player in Hilltoppers’ history to reach the 200 point club, after going 3-for-3 on field goals and hit three extra points as well, his career total now rests at 206 points. He also currently leads the nation with 2.5 field goals per game, and ranks second in the country with 10 total FG’s made. Schwetty also leads Conference USA in points with 50 on the year. One more thing – Saturday marked the fourth straight multiple-field goal outing for 56, as well as the 13th of his career. We have a special kicker, yall.
I probably don’t need to tell you who the second Topper to be recognized is.
Even though he didn’t eclipse 400 yards last week, Brandon Doughty still picked up honors from Athlon Sports and College Sports Madness, both selecting him as the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week. (In fact, Doughty was the only C-USA player recognized by Athlon after an interesting week elsewhere around the conference.)
Doughty lead two touchdown drives of over 80 yards – of 88 and 91 yards – and threw for 387 yards on 38-of-54 passing. Nationally, Doughty ranks second in total passing yards (1,846), third in completions (155) and fourth in touchdown passes (14).
As we end Navy week and look ahead to UAB, the question again becomes “who is going to be honored come the beginning of next week,” not “I wonder if the Tops will get recognized.” It’s amazing to see how quickly this program has become a winning one, and the conference jump certainly doesn’t hurt.
Who are you looking for big games from this week? Will Doughty get back to 400 yards passing? Let us know below in a comment or on twitter @WaveTheRedTowel.
