The Lady Toppers made a pair of historic moments in one swoop. Not only did they play in their first ever Conference USA game this afternoon in Hunington against Marshall, but they leave with their first ever CUSA win in a 67-53 victory over the Lady Herd.

Five Lady Tops finished in double figure points, lead by 22 points from Alexis Govan, playing in her first conference game in over a year after missing all of the conference schedule last year. Ileana Johnson finished just five points behind Govan with 17, while Micah Jones, Tashia Brown and Chastity Gooch all finished with 10 points.

On the contrary, only two Lady Herd players finished with 10 or more points – Aja Sorrells with 14 and the leading scorer Chukwuka Ezeigbo with 23.

Chas Gooch became an instant trivia answer as she netted the first bucket for WKU in Conference USA, and eventually got out to a 12-6 lead and, for the most part, thats where the lead would stay for the Tops. They’d lead 34-23 at halftime before winning by the 67-53 final score.

The Lady Toppers shot 42% from the floor, 35% from beyond the arc and 63% from the free throw line. The Tops also won the glass in every aspect, grabbing 45 total boards, 17 on the defensive end and 18 on the offensive glass.

Unfortunately for CUSA opponents, the Herd was one of the better teams that could knock the Lady Tops from their heights. Luckily, that didn’t transpire today and the roll for WKU continues.
