Who’s Hot? Who’s Not? for the Hilltoppers

With this being the first full athletic year that Wave the Red Towel has been around, we are coming up with all sorts of new features. Today, we debut yet another one, and this is something to look forward to every week. Each week, we will look back at the week at was, and tell you who, in our minds, is hot and who is not.

Who’s Hot?

Caitlin Hesse (soccer) – Hesse scored the first, and so far only, goal in C-USA play for the WKU soccer team, after netting her first of the year in the 58th minute against Marshall over the weekend. The goal was also Hesse’s first ever game winning one.

Alyssa Cavanaugh (volleyball) – With each and every match, Alyssa Cavanaugh is proving to be a great player. She has recorded double-digit kills in two straight matches – both of which have been 12 kill performances – and she was the lone Lady Topper representative of last weekend’s Spartan Invitational All-Tournament Team. She has four more years here, and just a month into her playing career, that’s a scary thing.

Allison Leone (soccer) – The freshman goalie had huge shoes to fill, replacing senior Nora Abolins who helped lead WKU to the regular season Sun Belt championship. But, so far, the Atlanta native has done just that, as she surpassed the 40 save mark in the win over Marshall and has shutout five opponents through eight games this year. The Lady Tops have won three in a row, and it’s in large part due to great goaltending play.

Who’s Not?

WKU rushing defense (football) – The Tops got the win against Navy, but boy, does the run defense need work. They gave up 412 yards on the ground to the Midshipmen, and allowed two 100 yard rushers in QB Keenan Reynolds (121 yards on 24 carries) and Noah Copeland (five carries for 104 yards)

Volleyball serving – The Lady Toppers survived a scare on Sunday, beating Rice in five sets. But, they didn’t make it easy on themselves, as they recorded nine service errors in the match – something they also did against Louisiana Tech. If this trend continues, the Lady Tops are going to learn the hard way that C-USA isn’t the Sun Belt, and the teams in this conference can, and will, take advantage of unnecessary, self-depleting errors.

So, it’s your turn. Who’s Hot? Who’s Not? In your book? Who did we over look? Who did we undersell? Let us know and give us the hate below in a comment, or on twitter @WaveTheRedTowel.
