WKU blanks Lipscomb 2-0 to open season
The Lady Toppers soccer squad opened their season with an impressive 2-0 win over the Lipscomb Lady Bison, behind a pair of goals from Lauren Moats in just 63 minutes of time on the pitch, as well as seven saves for freshman Allison Leone, one recorded her first collegiate victory.
WKU outplayed the Bison in nearly every aspect of the game – the Lady Tops had more total shots and more saves, but Lipscomb put more shots on target than the Tops did, as well as had more set-piece opportunities (four), which makes Leone’s clean sheet even that much more impressive.
Something that I’ve been highlighting all throughout the preseason, as well as in the preview for today’s match, is that the Lady Toppers needed to buck last year’s trend of late goal scoring – something that has been accomplished both in the two game exhibition slate, as well as tonight, as Moats’ first goal game in the 35th minute. The second Moats goal came 40 minutes later, and was assisted by Bria Mosley, who I’m expecting to do a whole lot of this year.
In all, all but one Lady Topper saw playing time, and were lead by Alanna Clancey and Chandler Clark, who played 76 total minutes.
The ladies will be off tomorrow, and open their home schedule against another Atlantic Sun team in Mercer on Sunday. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
