Ben Lawson Shines for Great Britain

While most eyes on the international level are focused on this thing called the World Cup, the eyes located here on the Hill are interested in one of their own taking the international stage; that being sophomore Ben Lawson who’s suited up for the Great Britain international squad.

Lawson and his fellow country men started the U20 European Championship run in Crete, Greece with a close 64-62 victory over Latvia. As a team, the English had an average game all around, but the stats that truly separate the two squads were Britain’s hot hands from behind the arc and at the charity stripe. Lawson and Co. went 37% from three and capitalized on 15 of their 21 attempts at the free throw line; thus giving them the upper hand and securing the small margin of victory.

Now for our Hilltopper – Lawson had a decent outing as he secured 12 points and five rebounds for his squad. And, while this wasn’t his best game from the floor, as he only shot 20% (2-10), his presence was definitely felt from the free shots as he attempted nearly half of Great Britain’s free throws, and completed 8 out of his 10 attempts (including sinking two with 10 seconds left). Lawson’s height helped him find three offensive boards and two rebounds on the defensive end. One more tidbit to be added – Lawson saw the most minutes on the court for the English, as he was out on the hardwood for a total of 36 minutes and 18 seconds.

The Great Britain squad will gear up tomorrow as they take on Hungary. WTRT will continue to bring you coverage of what all goes down in the tourney.
