Tops of the Sun Belt Moment #23 – Jeremy Evans Slam Dunk King

Okay, okay, you got me. This moment almost quite literally has nothing to do with Western Kentucky athletics, but it was an exciting time to be apart of the Hilltopper family, and see one of our #ProToppers reach the height of his respective sport. In 2012, when Orlando, Florida, hosted the NBA All-Star Game and Skills Competition, former WKU ??? Jeremy Evans competed in the Slam Dunk contest, and brought both Hilltopper and Utah Jazz fans together for a new voting format that helped bring Evans’ crown home to Salt Lake and Bowling Green.

Evans, who was named as a replacement for the injured Iman Shumpert, had to battle out Derrick Willimas, Paul George and Chase Budinger in the final round, and thanks to both text votes and, for the first time, twitter voting using hashtags, Evans narrowly beat out Budinger by a single percentage point of the votes. The slam that did it was when he jumped over someone in a chair, who tossed him TWO…count ’em, TWO…balls, and he threw them both down.

This happened on the same night that Tops basketball squad beat MTSU to close out the regular season in Diddle, and move on to their magical Four Wins in Four Days in Hot Springs.
