More excitement was added last week to the already high anticipations for the upcoming Western Kentucky sporting year. This round of news involved the WKU Lady Toppers basketball squad, as they received an invite to attend the 2014 Preseason Women’s NIT.

WKU is one of 16 teams in the field, and will have the opportunity to meet old foes and new opponents. Some outstanding names in the field include Mississippi State, Penn State, Seton Hall and West Virginia. There is also a former conference opponent, Arkansas State, and longtime WKU rival, Eastern Kentucky.

E.A. Diddle had previously been announced as the host to an Opening Round matchup for the tournament set for November 14th.

This will make the Lady Tops’ fourth appearance in the tournament, which just so happens to be the most out of any competitor in the field. WKU is also 4-0 when playing on the Diddle hardwood and are 6-3 all time in the tourney. The Tops, along with Southern Miss, will also be the first squad to partake in the event from Conference-USA since Memphis took part in the 2012 contest.

The upcoming season will be Michelle Clark-Heard’s 3rd full season on the Hill, and coming off an exciting and prosperous 2013-14 campaign, I can say the Lady Toppers will have a lot of momentum heading into the season opener.
