What seemed like a lovely day on the hill turned out to be only beautiful weather wise as the baseball Tops took one to the chin this afternoon at Nick Denes Field losing game two of 3 4-13.

On the mound for WKU was Southpaw senior Austin Clay. Clay entered the game 3-0 on the year, that being said however he would be the losing pitcher in todays match. In 5 innings of play Clay rendered 7 hits on eight runs before being pulled. Clay allowed those hits in the first 2 innings of the game then tied a career high six strike outs. The tops healed within striking distance of TSU but could seal it as the Hilltoppers bullpen could make much of what they were given. Leading WKU in the batting category were Freshman Clint Hardy, and Hunter Wood. Both greenhorns recorded RBI ground outs scoring Flaherty, and Wood to get two Hilltopper runs across home plate.

For Texas State Austen Williams would get the win going 6 full innings before his evening was ended. he allowed four runs on five hits while striking out five as well and receiving his 3rd win of the 2014 season. TSU got three runs off of 3 hits to start the six and didn’t let off the gas. For Texas State leader was Garret Mattlage, he knocked in two more runs in the 7th to end the running and finish the evening.

WKU and Texas State will start their rubber match Sunday at Nick Denes Stadium at 1pm. The Tops will look to rebound and the Bobcats will look to keep the hit hand. We will have your pre game notes here on Wave The Red Towel tomorrow around and hour before the game. Until then, enjoy march madness and as always… GO TOPS!
