If this were a football game, we’d be holding our heads high and would be incredibly encouraged by the performance on the field.

But, unfortunately, it was baseball, a sport with no where near the talent discrepancy, and it should have been a Hilltopper victory.

But, alas, we are squandering in defeat, as those damn dirty Georgia Bulldogs swept the midweek series by taking tonight’s game 8-6, and extended their win streak to 10-games.

The Tops held a 5-2 lead after three innings, thanks to a 4-run top of the third which saw Regan Flaherty drive in two runs with a triple, and Ryan Church drive Flaherty in with a double, and then Philip Diedrick drove Church in with a single. After that though, the WKU offense went silent, as the UGA bullpen combined for 6.2 innings of one-run ball, with that run coming in the top of the 9th when Anderson Miller was driven in by Scott Wilcox.

The unfortunate thing is, Brandon Allen pitched a pretty solid game. It took him a little bit to get going, but finished the evening throwing 4 full innings and did allow 6 hits, but managed to only allow 3 Dawgs to cross the plate. It was, unfortunately, the bullpen that allowed Georgia back in the game, along with some sloppy defense as Wilcox was charged with two errors, Thomas Peter was charged with another one, and there was a play between Church and Wilcox on a bunt where they both went to field the ball, and neither one of them wound up making a play.

It was just an odd night defensively.

Worse than the loss on the scoreboard was the loss of leadoff hitter and short stop Cody Woffordwho left the game in the third inning after beating out a bunt for an infield hit, but grabbed the back of his leg and went to the ground, needing help to get to the dugout. I haven’t seen anything on his status, and hopefully it was just a cramp or a hamstring over-stretch. As soon as we find out anything, of course we will let you know.

No time to dwell on it, though. The Tops will head to Atlanta to begin their final season of Sun Belt Conference play on Friday as they take on the Georgia State Panthers.

The real season is about to begin.
