Late yesterday, it was announced that WKU closer Jake Thompson was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, becoming the first Hilltopper to win a player of the week award in baseball.

Thompson had one of the better outings over the weekend, which is saying quite a lot after a sweep over the Illinois Illini, who came off of sweeping the Florida Gators, as he threw seven scoreless innings and struck out seven batters, a new career high for him, and only allowed four base runners as the game went on.

Thompson currently has an ERA of 0.81, which is the second lowest among all Sun Belt pitchers, but has a league-low of only two runs allowed.

His shutout work, which was finished off by the bullpen to beat the Illini 1-0, was the fist Hilltopper shutout since blanking ULL 3-0 last season.

Thompson is the 19th WKU pitcher to ever win the SBC honor, and the first since Taylor Haydel in 2012.

Unfortunately, we wont see Thompson in action this week against Georgia, but hopefully he can take the bump and continue his dominate performance to open conference play against the Georgia State Panthers.

From all of us at Wave The Red Towel, we’d like to say congrats, Jake.

Stand up and cheers.
