Post Game: Tops 2 – Lipscomb 10

Most people say to succeed in sports you must have a short memory. For the WKU baseball team, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they can wash out this afternoon’s game from their minds and set their sights on the weekend series against Illinois.

The Baseball Tops dropped todays game to theLipscomb Bisonby a score of 10-2. The Bison, with the help on a healthy second inning, made WKU’s visit to the Music City a not so sweet sounding melody. The Hilltoppers only managed to get runs in the 3rd and 8th innings.

Western Kentucky managed to get runners on base as heavy-hitting shortstopCody Woffordhit a right field triple, sendingDavid Simmonsacross home plate. It would take until late in the game, the 8th inning to be exact, to get the Hilltoppers second run. First basemanRyan Churchhit a lead off double and then waited on teammateRegan Flahertyto send an RBI single that would plate Mr. Church. For junior pitcherBrandon Allen,tonight might not have been his greatest outing. He pitched solidly in the first, third, and fourth innings as he struck out two, and only allowed two hits in those innings. That being said however, Allen was responsible for Lipscomb’s 5 run second inning. SophomoreJackson Sowellcame in relief, as he pitched two solid innings allowing no runs and rendering 2 strike outs of his own.

For the Bison, it was a lovely afternoon as the sugar filled melody of solid hits connecting on their bats never seemed to get old for them, especially in the 2nd inning. The inning of doom was started by second basemanMike Korte,who hit a two RBI single to start the inning. The second was scored as 5 runs off 4 hits and one Hiltopper error. After staying silent, the Bison would heat up again in the 7th as they would get RBI hits fromJosh Lee,Griffin Moore, andHunter Hanksto stick the final dagger in the Tops. Freshman southpawJohn Pryorwould get the win for Lipscomb.

The loss sends the Hilltoppers to 7-5 on the season and the win boosts the Bison to 5-8.

Things to note for WKU;Thomas Peteradvanced his on-base hit streak to 19-games, and junior backstopTy Downinggunned down two stealing attempts by the Bisons, improving his streak to six runners caught stealing in 4 starts.

The Hilltoppers will get a day off on Thursday, following that break they will face theFighting Illiniat Nick Denes Field for a weekend series.
