Well talk about a pick-me-up!
This game should erase the bad memories that reminisced in the Lady Hilltoppers minds after a three game losing skid.
From the beginning, it looked like it was going to be a great game…that was until WKU decided to jump out on a 17-0 run and begin to leave the Trojans behind. However, as if that wasn’t enough, from the beginning of that streak to the halftime buzzer, the Lady Tops went on a 41 to 6 run… and no that is not a typo. The score at the half would read 52 to 19 in favor of the Lady Tops. So without further explanation, you should get the assumption that the Tops won this thing in a blowout. Now the question is how did they manage to win to win in that fashion?
Let’s first talk the Trojans. The Trojans had one double digit scorer in Joanna Harden, as she put up 26 points. The leading rebounder for Troy was Ashley Beverly-Kelley, who grabbed 6 boards. One of the downfalls for the Trojans was they had 24 in total… TWENTY-FOUR! They didn’t have that bad of an outing from the charity stripe, as they saw 15 of their 20 attempts fall. The Trojans also couldn’t stop the Tops from entering the lane, as they allowed 48 points in the paint. Troy just didn’t have a plan for the Tops tonight…to say the least.
Now for the Tops, and all I can say is “oh my!” WKU was clicking on all cylinders both offensively and defensively. The leading scorers for the Tops included Kendall Noble (26 points), Chastity Gooch (22), Micah Jones (17), and Bianca McGee and Jalynn McClain (10 points a piece). In Gooch’s 22 points, she surpassed the 400 point mark on the season for the second season in a row, becoming only the 8th Lady Topper to reach such a feat in both their sophomore and junior seasons. Noble led the team in steals as she forced the Trojans to turn the ball over six times. As for rebounding the Lady Tops spread the boards out, accumulating a team total of 53. With 22 of those coming on the offensive end.
WKU was able to drive from the get-go and began showing their range towards the end of the first half. As a team, this was a game that the Lady Tops needed to come out and perform exactly in the way they did. Basically, this game was won by the Tops at every stat on the line. This game should build up their confidence and conclude the mental fatigue. Along with that this win should give the squad the momentum they need to close out the season and head into the Conference Tournament.
This one was a fun one to watch and it makes me so excited to watch the boys game between the same two squad to round out the double header. Until tomorrow, celebrate with the Lady Tops as they cruise for a great dub! Stand up and cheer!
