WKU Weely Wrap-Up: 2/2/14 – 2/8/14

Depends on how you look at it, it was a very successful week for the Toppers, or…things could get real ugly real fast.

Men’s Basketball: WKU 79 – UALR 78
The beat of the winning streak goes on to the tune of a magical drum, as the Hilltoppers somehow escaped Little Rock with a W, keeping the streak in-tact at 6, and keeping second-place in the standings (for the time being). The man of the hour, and probably next week or so, Trency Jackson launched a loooong distance 3-point shot, which left his hands right as the horn sounded, to give WKU the thrilling victory in a game, honestly, the Tops had no business winning. Trency, fittinglgy, lead all scorers with 20 points (along with UALR’s Josh Hagins, who had himself a fine game as well) and was 2-3 from beyond the arc. Brandon Harris (15) and T.J. Price (12) also scored in double figures, and the tops as a team shot 42%. Up next, WKU will take on Arkansas State tomorrow.

Women’s Basketball: WKU 75 – Arkansas State 78, WKU 51 – UALR 58
My oh my. What is wrong with the Lady Toppers right before the home stretch to this season? Currently in the midst of a 3-game losing streak, and getting swept in the season series by the Red Wolves, these past three games are the end result of weaknesses the Lady Toppers have had all season being exposed. WKU, who once was second in the league, has dropped to fourth, but believe it or not, it isn’t all bad.  Chastity Gooch and Kendall Noble both scored double-digits in both games this week, and Noble continues to be valuable in Alexis Govan‘s absense.

Softball: WKU 9 – Liberty 1, WKU 3 – Ole Miss 2, WKU 6 – Georgetown 0, WKU 2 – Florida Gulf Coast 3
Softball season is here! The Amy Tudor reign on the Hill began in Florida over the weekend, and the Lady Toppers showed up, losing only once to the host school, FCGU, and beating Ole Miss and blanking Georgetown in the process. Emily Rousseau pitched in 3 of the 4 games, and threw a total of 15 innings, allowing only 4 earned runs, and punching out 14 batters via the strikeout. Offensively, the team was lead by preseason SBC Player of the Year Olivia Watkins, as she finished the weekend hitting .571 with 8 hits and 2 extra base hits, and scored 4 runs. Two more ladies, Andie Martin and Amanda Thomas, also finished the weekend above the .300 mark, and both went yard.

We, of course, can’t talk about this past week without showing you this, from Mr. Jackson. The play nearly broke the WKU twitterverse, and made SportsCenters Top 10 coming in at the #4 spot.

While more of a busy weekend than busy week, still a lot of excitement around the Hill. It’ll be an exciting week for us as well, as not only will the Roundball Round up come out tomorrow, but we have a week day game tomorrow, followed by our power rankings, followed by women’s hoops followed by men’s hoops followed by baseball starting…

Breathe. Just breathe.

It’s getting busy, and I hope you’re looking forward to it just as I am.

Stand up and cheers.
