First and foremost, all the credit in the world to Michelle Clark-Heard’s squad. They got off to a bad start, but didn’t let that deflate them. The team fought back, made it a 3-point game at one point, and were in it for most of the game. But, there’s a reason Louisville is in the top 5.
Experience plus skill equals a good club, and that’s what gave UofL the advantage tonight. The Lady Tops limited Shoni Schimmel to only 12 points in 31 minutes, and the most they allowed to a single player was 16 from Bria Smith.
Chastity Gooch stole Alexis Govan’s position at the top of the WKU scoring sheet, as Gooch led the way with 21 points, followed by Govan’s 14. No other Lady Topper scored more than 8 (Bianca McGee), which is one of the immediate things to look for as to why WKU couldn’t pull this one out.
WKU committed 20 turnovers and grabbed 31 boards. While the Cardinals turned the ball over more (25) they also gave themselves more opportunities for points (42 rebounds), and capitalized on most of them.
This game was one that the Tops could have had, but unfortunately, things didn’t go that way. In another year or two, WKU will be ready, but tonight, the #4 team in the land escapes the near upset.
Don’t get down in the dumps though. It was a good effort, and this is exactly the type of effort this team needs to be putting out before the “real” schedule, conference play, begins.
Although it’s a loss, stand up and cheer. Today. And every day.
