WKU Weekly Wrap-up: 11/3-11/9

Man, was it ever a busy week for the Tops. And the good news? It’s only getting busier!

Soccer – Sun Belt Tournament  – WKU 2 – UALR 1, WKU 1 – Texas st. 0
The number one seeded Lady Tops certainly did not disappoint in their showing during the Sun Belt Soccer tournament in San Marcos Texas. Senior Chrissy Tchula and freshman Iris Dunn were the only two goal scorers for the Ladies in the tournament, but it would prove to be enough as Coach Niedell’s squad reached the championship game, but lost to South Al (full recap will be in next week’s WKU Wrap-up).

Volleyball: WKU 3 – ULL 0
The roll continues for Travis Hudson and his Lady Topper volleyball squad, as WKU got revenge on ULL, the first team to beat WKU in conference play since MTSU in 2011, with a 3-0 sweep. Haley Bodway led the offensive attack with 8 kills, followed closely behind by Heather Boyan with 6. Miss Assist, Melanie Stutsman disappointed (relatively…in sarcasm font) with only 25 assists, but did match a career high with 6 services aces.

Women’s Basketball: WKU 100 – Glenville St. 67 (Exhb), WKU 78 – Austin Peay 75
While impressive that WKU put up 100, it was after all an exhibition. The real season tipped off Saturday with the Lady Governors of Austin Peay, and early weaknesses were exposed. Down by double digits throughout the game, it took Chastity Gooch 15 points AND boards and Bianca McGee scoring 21 from the bench to escape an APSU team that only won 7 games a year ago. The ladies had to defend off a last second 3-pointer from APSU to secure the first victory of the season. The first true test comes tonight in Nashville, as MCH leads her squad against Vandy.

Swim & Dive: Mens – WKU 195 Cincinnati 101 Womens – WKU 195 – UC 102
The swim and dive team kept their season rolling by beating the Bearcats in both men’s and women’s. The Tops would combine to win 24 individual events, and 6 saw Tops finish in the top 3.

Football: WKU 21 – Army 17
It wasn’t pretty. Not even remotely. But it doesn’t matter. WKU is bowl eligible once again! The Tops went into West Point and played a hideous football game, but came out with the W. Antonio Andrews, while he lost his position as the nation’s leading rusher, ran for 117 and a lone score, but that score would be the difference. Doughty proved his injury last week was nothing and threw for 199 yards and 2 TDs…and yes…a pick. Willie McNeal was the only other Hilltopper to go into triple digits offensively, as the receiver had 101 yards on 6 catches. WKU actually lost some stat categories, including time of possession and total yards, but committed fewer penalties.

Like I said before, busy busy busy. But if you’re a sports fan, this is one of, if not the, best time of the year.

Stand up and cheers.
