While most of the sports eyes will be on the NBA season tipping off tonight, if you’re a WKU fan, your eyes should be focused in on Diddle Arena, as the Lady Toppers basketball squad will unofficially begin their 2013-2014 campaign with an exhibition game against Kentucky Wesleyan.

If you followed @WaveTheRedTowel on twitter last Thursday during media day, or looked at any of the post-presser coverage, it is no secret that both Ray Harper and Michelle Clark-Heard have plenty of optimism surrounding both of their teams, but, if you can believe it, it seems there more hype and attention to go along the women’s side of things this year.

For those unaware, Western Kentucky is one of the most successful women’s basketball programs in history. They rank 13th in all time wins, and have more wins than in-state rivals UK and Louisville, as long as more wins than arch nemesis Middle Tennessee. Last season, in Coach Clark-Heard’s first season at the helm, WKU posted the best record turnaround in the history of the Sun Belt. The team advanced into the WNIT, winning the first game, but getting knocked out in Auburn to close the season. Not a bad run, for sure.

Earlier today, the Sun Belt released all of its women’s preseason polls, and WKU fans have every reason to smile about it.

First, and foremost, junior guard Alexis Govan was selected as the SBC preseason Player of the Year, after being the 3rd highest scoring Sophomore in the nation last season, and set a career high in points with 40 vs. North Texas.

As for the rest of the team, they were picked to finish behind the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, but WKU only lost to UALR by 3 total points, and only got 2 less 1st place votes. Not bad for a team that just two seasons ago won 10 games.
