The first WKU player in several years to make an NFL roster is now looking for a new one.

Bobby Rainey, the go-to for WKU football during Willie Taggart’s timespan on the Hill, was waived yesterday by the Cleveland Browns, in order to make room on the roster for newly promoted WR Tori Gurley & DB Julian Posey. DB Josh Aubrey was also placed on IR in the move.

Rainey had been released by the team that originally signed him as a non-drafted free agent in 2012, the Baltimore Ravens, during the preseason. WKU fans were hoping Rainey would see more touches for CLE following the Trent Richardson trade, but no such luck ever came his way.

For the year, the first year he played a regular season game (he was on the BAL practice squad all last season), he had 13 rushes in 6 games for 34 yards, averaging 2.6 yards per carry. Rainey also caught 4 passes for 19 yards, and returned kickoffs, totaling 147 yards. Rainey is still chasing that elusive first NFL touchdown.

Rainey was the first player since Rod Smart (He Hate Me) and Anthony Oakley to make an NFL roster since 2007.

The move leaves Jack Doyle and Quanterus Smith (who is currently on IR) as the only former Toppers left in the NFL.

As soon as Rainey lands with another team, WTRT will let you know.

Stand up and cheers.
