WKU Weekly Wrap-up: 10/27-11/2

Well would you lookie there. I was wrong.
Late last week, I had predicted a 2-1 weekend record for WKU between the Georgia St. football game, and WKU men’s and women’s basketball scrimmages. I was wrong. It was 3-0. And, while I hate being wrong, I love when a Hilltopper squad can prove me wrong and make me eat my words. Anyways, I’ll quit rambling and get to the recap.

Volleyball: WKU 3 – Arkansas St. 0, WKU 3 – Texas St. 0, WKU – UT Arlington 0
My oh my, what a wonderful week for Travis Hudson and his volleyball team. Things looked rocky a few weeks ago when they first lost a set to ULM, then dropped a match to ULL, but now, things are back on track. The Red Wolves, Wildcats, and Mavericks. Since this is a span of 3 matches, I wont bore you with all the stats, BUT, if you are interested, click on each opposing school’s name for the WKUSports.com recap.

Soccer: WKU 0 – Evansville 0
Head coach Jason Niedell said it would be played very much like a preseason game, and it was just that. This final game of the regular season for the Lady Toppers didn’t mean much, and was used as a resting match for players such as Nora Abolins, Iris Dunn, Caitlin Hesse, and so on. The Lady Tops have the number 1 seed in the SBC tourney, and will get underway Thursday at 4 CT.

Football: WKU 44 – Georgia St. 28
The slide comes to an end! It was a little to close for comfort for some of the game, but the Tops finally ended their losing streak, are above .500 again, and kept the Panthers winless. Doughty started and played decent, finishing the day with 206 passing yards and throwing for a touchdown, but had to leave the game due to an injury. A.A. was solid, rushing for over 110 again on 22 carries, but was kept out of the endzone. Keshawn Simpson did cross the pylon 4 times on only 10 carries, and was the ultimate difference maker. The Tops head to West Point next week.

Women’s Basketball: WKU 87 – Kentucky Wesleyan 49
The Lady Toppers got to take the floor for the first time (not including Hysteria) this season, took care of business on Tuesday by defeating the Lady Panthers. WKU held KWC scoreless through their first 10 shots, and WKU jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Chasity Gooch, surprise surprise, notched a double double with 20 points and 14 boards, and her junior counterpart (both, also, are All-American candidates as well) finished the night with 16 points.

Men’s Basketball: WKU 87 – Campbellsville 73
WKU fans may now breathe…Campbellsville is not going to beat the Hilltoppers. Yet. WKU took the floor for the first time in their only preseason tuneup before the Tops take on the Shockers. The one standout, without a doubt, Brandon Price, who not only showed tremendous hustle, but was rewarded for it with 15 points, and a start in the 2nd half due to a Brandon Harris injury. T.J. Price joined Price with 15 points. WKU shot 43.5 percent from the floor with 8 three, losing that battle to Campbellsville, who hot 50.0 from everywhere on the floor, but WKU won rebounding 43-38.

What a week it was! Looking forward to the week it’ll be, and hopefully the Lady Tops can bring home the SBC tourney crown.

Stand up and cheers.
